✨ Holo Shine: How to restore the original mirror effect on your Pokémon cards?

🧼 Cleaning a holo card without scratching or dulling it: it’s possible.

Holographic Pokémon cards are among the most coveted items for collectors. Their iconic mirror effect is often what catches the eye… and the scores from grading experts (PSA, CGC, BGS).
But over time, fingerprints, micro-scratches, or dust dull their shine.

So, how do you restore the brilliance of a Holo card without any risk? And most importantly: which products are truly grading-safe? We explain everything.

🔍 Why do Holo cards lose their shine?

Holographic surfaces are extremely sensitive to light, humidity, and friction. Even simple handling without gloves can leave:

  • Greasy marks (fingerprints, moisture)
  • Micro-particles trapped in the foil lines
  • Light scratches caused by a cloth that is too abrasive or dry

Result: a Holo effect that appears blurry, dull... or is perceived as a “dirty surface” by a grader.

❌ What you must absolutely avoid doing

Before moving on to effective solutions, here are the methods to avoid at all costs:

  • Cleaning with water or soap: this leaves mineral residues and can create stains
  • Using pure alcohol or disinfectant wipes: this can alter the Holo film
  • Dry polishing with a dry cloth: high risk of micro-scratches

✅ The pro method: cleaning with Holo Shine gel

Why is a specific gel the best solution?

Unlike alcohol alone or wipes, a cosmetic gel calibrated for cards:

  • Is gentle and non-abrasive
  • Clings to the Holo surface without running
  • Dries without leaving a film or streaks
  • Restores the mirror effect safely
  • Example of gel used:

Restore+ Shine Gel – revives holographic effects
✔️ Lightweight semi-gel texture
✔️ 100% residue-free
✔️ Special for PSA / BGS grading

🧪 How to properly use the Holo Shine gel?

  1. Use a clean, antistatic foam or microfiber swab
  2. Apply a tiny drop of gel
  3. Apply locally to the Holo area using light, circular motions
  4. Let dry for 5 to 10 seconds
  5. Wipe with an ultra-soft microfiber cloth (no standard dry cloth!)

💡 For ultra-sensitive areas (EX, WOTC, Gold Stars), test first on a worthless card.

🎯 Is this allowed for grading?

Yes, cleaning a card is not prohibited by PSA, as long as:

  • No oily or resinous residue remains
  • There is no modification to the surface
  • No excessive pressure is applied

Holo Brilliance gel, when used correctly, is 100% grading safe.
