Holo shine: how to bring back a Pokémon card’s mirror finish
A holo card that has lost its shine isn’t necessarily damaged. Most of the time, a haze of fingerprints, fine dust and micro-scratches is breaking up the reflection. Here is how to revive the mirror finish without scratching or dulling the surface.
- A dull holo is usually dirty, not worn.
- Clean first, then revive: spray first, then gel.
- Apply a very small amount of gel without pressing, then buff with a microfibre cloth.
- A deep scratch that has cut into the holo layer will not disappear.
Why does a holo card lose its shine?
- Greasy fingerprints that build up into a haze.
- Fine dust trapped in the texture of the foil.
- Micro-scratches from a dirty sleeve, a rough cloth or rubbing.
- Less often, genuine wear of the holo layer, which is permanent.

What not to do
- Rubbing dry with a cloth: that is how micro-scratches appear.
- Using car polish, toothpaste or any abrasive product.
- Getting the card wet, even slightly.
- Applying the product directly to the card.
How to revive a holo
- Remove dust with a light pass of a microfibre cloth.
- Remove fingerprints and greasy film with the Restore+ cleaning spray applied to the cloth.
- Put a very small amount of Restore+ shine gel on a foam applicator.
- Work it over the holo area in small movements, without pressing.
- Buff straight away with a clean, dry microfibre cloth, still without pressure.
- Check under raking light: the mirror effect should be crisp and even.

The gel removes micro-scratches and light surface scuffs and brings back the shine of a dirty holo. It does not rebuild a damaged holo layer or erase a deep scratch. For details, see removing a micro-scratch from a Pokémon card.
Frequently asked questions
Does the shine gel work on Reverse and Full Art cards?
Yes, it can be used on all glossy surfaces: Holo, Reverse Holo, Full Art, EX, GX, V, VMAX or VSTAR.
Can I use it before grading?
Yes, to prepare the surface. The grader alone decides the grade, and a retouched card (ink, edges) is still a no-go.
How often can I revive a holo?
Only when needed. A card stored properly in a sleeve and semi-rigid holder keeps its shine for a long time.
