🧼 How to clean a Pokémon card before PSA grading? (Complete guide)

Sending a Pokémon card to PSA for grading is always a big moment for a collector. But be careful: a simple fingerprint, a speck of dust, or a thin oily film can cause you to lose a precious grade. In this article, we guide you step-by-step on how to clean your Pokémon card safely before sending it, without damaging it or raising any suspicion during grading.

🤔 Why clean a card before PSA grading?

PSA, CGC, or Beckett evaluate 4 criteria: centering, corners, edges, and surface.
A dirty, micro-scratched, or tarnished surface will lower the grade, even if the card is brand new.

Among the common issues:

  • Fingerprints invisible to the naked eye
  • Dust, plastic residue, light grease
  • Loss of shine on Holo areas

Proper cleaning can increase the final grade by 0.5 to 1 point if done correctly.

⚠️ What you must absolutely avoid doing

Before showing you the right method, here is what you must absolutely avoid:

🚫 Using pure alcohol or nail polish remover
🚫 Using a standard wet wipe
🚫 Scrubbing too hard with a cloth
🚫 Putting water directly on the card
🚫 Cleaning the back or the edges (too risky)

The goal is to remove impurities gently, not to “repair” the card.

✅ Recommended method: safe cleaning before grading

Equipment:

Ultra-soft microfiber (special for screens/glasses)

Large-head polyester swab

Restore+ cleaning spray or a special TCG grading-safe product

Nitrile or vinyl gloves

Soft lighting / magnifying glass / digital microscope

Steps:

  1. Wash your hands or wear gloves
To avoid adding other accidental marks
  2. Place the card on a clean, flat surface
Use a soft mat (playmat, microfiber cloth)
  3. Apply a micro-drop of gel to the cotton swab
➤ NEVER pour directly onto the card
  4. Clean the center area using small circular motions
➤ Do not touch the edges or corners
  5. Wipe immediately with a clean, dry microfiber cloth
➤ No residue should remain visible
  6. Inspect under raking light or with a microscope
➤ The surface must be clean, matte, free of haze, and have no added shine

💡 Tip: Holo area? Use a special gel

For Holo cards, use a slightly more technical gel, such as our Restore+ gloss gel:

  • Gentle micro-polishing
  • No residue after wiping
  • Restores the original mirror effect without over-shining

🔍 FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions

Is it detectable by PSA?

No, if you use a gel formulated for grading, without residue, without odor, and if you wipe it correctly. PSA does not penalize "gentle cleaning".

Can I also clean the back?

❌ It is very risky. The back is often more fragile, and PSA is very attentive to it. Only do it in case of an emergency (visible stain), and with great caution.
