Yellowed Pokémon card: can it be fixed?

It is a question that comes up often, especially with vintage cards. The honest answer: it depends on what is turning yellow. Part of the “yellow” is just dirt, and it cleans off. The other part is ageing of the card stock itself, and no product can remove it without damaging the card.

Key takeaways:
  • Surface grime can be cleaned off.
  • Yellowing of the card stock itself cannot be fixed.
  • Never use bleach, hydrogen peroxide or sunlight to “whiten” a card.
  • Dry storage away from light prevents yellowing.

Two very different kinds of yellowing

Surface grime: it cleans off

Built-up fingerprints, greasy film, caked-on dust, cigarette smoke, glue or plastic residue: over time, this layer gives a yellowish or greyish tint, especially on the blue back and the borders. It stays on the surface, and a suitable clean can remove it.

Yellowed card stock: it can’t be fixed

Card stock and inks age under light, heat and humidity. This yellowing is in the material itself: evenly yellowed borders, white turned cream, faded colours on a card left in the sun. No cleaning will bring back its original colour.

How can you tell which yellow it is?

  • Uneven patches, stronger where the card is held: probably dirt.
  • An even tint across the whole border or the whole back: probably aged card stock.
  • The microfibre test: on a matte area, gently wipe with a clean microfibre cloth and a little suitable cleaner. If the cloth picks up colour, part of the yellow is grime.

Cleaning off grime safely

  1. Dust the card with a microfibre cloth.
  2. On matte areas, spray the Restore+ cleaning spray onto the cloth, never onto the card, then wipe in small movements.
  3. For corners and edges, use precision cotton swabs.
  4. If the holo front is dull, finish with the shine gel.

These products remove dirt and revive the surface; they don’t change the colour of card stock that has genuinely yellowed.

What you should never do

  • Bleach, hydrogen peroxide, “whitening” products: they attack the ink and the card stock.
  • Leaving the card in the sun or under a UV lamp to “whiten” it: you speed up ageing.
  • Erasers, paper towels, alcohol or acetone: micro-scratches, running ink, warped card stock.
  • Soaking the card: it deforms.

What about grading?

A clean card avoids losing points to marks or dust. Yellowed card stock, however, stays visible and weighs on the grade: better to know it before sending than to try to “whiten” it and damage the card. See should you clean a card before grading?.

Preventing yellowing

  • Store your cards in sleeves, then in a toploader or a suitable binder.
  • Keep them away from direct light.
  • Avoid cellars and attics: heat and humidity speed up ageing.
  • Handle them with clean, dry hands.

Frequently asked questions

Can a yellowed Pokémon card be whitened?

No, not without damaging it. Only surface grime can be removed with a gentle clean.

Does the spray remove the yellow?

It removes the dirt that causes a yellowish tint. It does not change the colour of card stock that has aged.

How can I stop a card from yellowing?

Sleeve, rigid protection, dry storage away from direct light.
